Workshop description
Upcoming Automated Driving (AD) systems will allow drivers to be temporarily hands-off and eyes-off. This requires fault-tolerant, redundant system architectures that can provide, at the very least, degraded functionality for a limited time frame. While OEMs are aware of the need for redundancy and strive to implement it in their technical or physical architectures, it is often application-driven rather than systematically derived from a consistent conceptual (or logical) system architecture based on first principles.
Within ‘The Autonomous Safety & Architecture Working Group’, we have identified, described, and evaluated conceptual architectures for AD systems. We have also outlined considerations for implementing conceptual architectures using physical HW and SW elements.
We published our first edition report in late 2023. Since then, new conceptual system architectures and industry examples have emerged, enabling more comprehensive comparisons. The second edition report is scheduled for release at The Autonomous Main Event 2025 this September. It will consider new architectures, discuss relevant standards in greater detail, and propose a scheme for evaluating the independence between architectural elements.
Within this workshop, we will dive deep into the following topics:
- What were the key findings of the first edition report? Why are conceptual system architectures helpful, which ones proved suitable for AD, and which underlying patterns do they share? Which new architectures have emerged since then?
- Which industry safety standards affect the suitability of conceptual system architectures?
- How can sufficient independence be achieved between subsystems making up a redundant architecture? How independent is independent enough?
