Workshop description
Upcoming Highly Automated Driving (HAD) systems will allow drivers to be temporarily hands-off and eyes-off. This requires fault-tolerant, redundant system architectures that can provide, at the very least, degraded functionality for a limited time frame. While OEMs mostly are aware of the need for redundancy and strive to implement it in their physical architectures, it is often introduced in an ad-hoc manner instead of systematically deriving from a consistent logical system architecture based on first principles.
Within ‘The Autonomous Safety & Architecture Working Group’, we have identified, described, and evaluated logical architectures for HAD systems. We have also outlined considerations for implementing logical architectures by physical HW and SW elements.
We published our first round of results in a report in late 2023. Branching off from there, we now turn our efforts to more complex implementation considerations where established best practices are sorely needed.
Within this workshop, we will dive deep into three topics:
- How can sufficient independence be achieved between subsystems making up a redundant architecture? We are working on a common strategy covering both Functional Safety and Safety of the Intended Functionality, as well as more detailed guidelines for each respective perspective.
- Security measures can impact the availability of HAD systems – how can the potentially conflicting priorities of security and safety be identified and how can they be balanced?
- How can we ensure that a deployed system remains safe over its lifetime, and what kind of post-deployment observation is necessary to support incremental improvements and ODD extensions by future upgrades?
